A full explanation including risks and benefits ensures you have a thorough understanding of the treatment and related procedures. Prior to each TMS treatment a safety screen occurs to make sure it is safe for you to have treatment. Treatment appointments can be arranged to suit your commitments and you are able to resume your normal activities after TMS treatment.

Support is provided in a holistic fashion. We know that poor mental health is associated with poor physical health, which is why our Specialist GP clinic is integral to our holistic and comprehensive service mix. Our GP clinic supports the recovery journey by maximising physical health and wellbeing through lifestyle and functional medicine treatment approaches.

What is TMS?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a medication-free treatment that uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of your brain.

It is a safe and effective alternative treatment for people with treatment-resistant depression and those who haven’t found relief through traditional therapies such as medication and talk therapy.

Studies show that TMS treatment is highly effective and can offer significant relief from depressive symptoms.

Many people experience total remission from depression with TMS.

How does TMS work?

TMS delivers targeted stimulation to small areas of the brain associated with mood regulation, all without the need for surgery or medication.

During the procedure, a magnetic coil is placed against the scalp to stimulate a specific region of the brain. This coil generates magnetic pulses that penetrate the brain tissue, producing minor electrical currents that activate the superficial layers of the brain. When the stimulation reaches sufficient intensity, brain cells fire and influence deeper structures implicated in depression.

Most individuals do not find TMS painful, though you may notice slight involuntary twitches in muscles around the forehead, eyes, or scalp, as well as a mild tapping sensation beneath the coil.

Brain & Mind Hub is the only clinic offering three different TMS protocols—Standard, Accelerated, and Intensive. The primary distinction among these options lies in the treatment schedule, enabling us to provide greater flexibility to suit both your lifestyle and recovery goals.

What can TMS help with?

Numerous studies have shown TMS to be effective in providing relief for people who are experiencing one or more of the following:

Depression

Anxiety

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Post-stroke recovery

Is TMS right for me?

TMS is generally well-tolerated and suitable for people over 18 who have been assessed as eligible by a psychiatrist.

We are committed to providing proven and effective neuroscience-driven mental healthcare to all who need it. If TMS is not the right solution for you, we will work with you to explore other treatment options that are suitable.

How does TMS compare to other treatments?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatment

TMS is a highly effective and well-tolerated treatment for depression.

Traditional TMS protocols have demonstrated approximately a 50% improvement in symptoms for many patients, making this approach particularly valuable for those who have not responded to conventional therapies.

Newer accelerated protocols offer a significant advancement by delivering multiple TMS sessions over a condensed period, resulting in faster symptom relief.

Early research indicates that these accelerated protocols can achieve roughly an 80% improvement in depressive symptoms, providing a promising alternative for individuals with treatment-resistant depression.

Traditional treatments

Traditional psychiatric treatments primarily involve antidepressant medication.

Although these conventional approaches have been utilised for decades, their success rates vary widely and research indicates that approximately only 30% of patients achieve remission from depressive symptoms, though this percentage can fluctuate depending on the type of medication used.

While some patients benefit from these treatments, many people experience treatment resistance (where treatment stops being effective), or side effects that can range from mild to extremely unpleasant. This underscores the importance of developing more personalised and effective treatment options, such as those provided by TMS.

TMS FAQ’s

Is TMS therapy safe?

Extensive research indicates that TMS is safe and free from long-term side effects, although there may still be unknown risks. The primary adverse effect associated with TMS is the potential to induce a seizure. However, the likelihood of this occurring is approximately 1 in 30,000 treatments, thanks to current protocols and proper coil placement.

Our team consists of leading experts in TMS treatment with extensive experience delivering safe, personalised treatment plans that align with each individual’s unique neurobiology.

How quickly will I see results?

Newer accelerated TMS protocols have reported remission rates of approximately 80% in patients with treatment-resistant depression. This approach, which administers multiple sessions over a condensed period, offers a rapid and robust response.

In contrast, traditional antidepressants generally yield remission rates of around 30%, underscoring the potential advantage of accelerated TMS for individuals who have not achieved sufficient improvement with conventional therapies.

Most people who respond to TMS start to feel different after 10 treatments. The full treatment response usually occurs after approx. 15 treatments, but this can vary depending on individual characteristics.

How much does TMS cost?

Cost of treatment can vary depending on a number of factors, including individual diagnosis, the treatment plan you intend to undertake, and your previous experience with other treatments. You may also be eligible to have treatments covered by Medicare, NDIS or DVA depending on individual circumstances.

We understand that seeking help is the first courageous step towards a brighter tomorrow. Our support team are here to help.

To make an initial appointment, complete the enquiry form below and one of our friendly staff will be in touch with you shortly.

Please note: You will require a referral from your Medical Practitioner prior to booking an appointment with one of our psychiatrists. If you would like to speak with our team first, please call us on (07) 5220 8793.

STEP

Screening call

Once we receive your intake form, our specialist support team will give you a call to discuss your next steps and connect you with an experienced TMS clinician that can meet your individual needs.

STEP

Consent and dosage (Resting Motor Threshold)

At the start of your TMS treatment journey, you will have an in-depth assessment with one of our TMS Specialist Psychiatrists to determine your individual TMS protocol for your condition.

Your treatment dose or Resting Motor Threshold (RMT) will be determined during your initial consultation. To establish your Resting Motor Threshold, you'll undergo isolated TMS pulses administered to your motor cortex located in your frontal lobe. This process identifies the optimal stimulation intensity needed to elicit a response in your brain. This determined dosage serves as the basis for calibrating the treatment protocol tailored specifically to your needs.

STEP

TMS treatment

Once your RMT is determined and you have been deemed eligible for treatment, your acute TMS course will begin.

An initial course of TMS usually consists of up to 35 sessions. Sessions are provided up to 5 times per week for approximately 20 to 45 minutes per appointment. You can resume your normal activities immediately afterward.

STEP

Maintenance TMS treatment

Some people might also receive additional maintenance TMS treatment, 3 to 6 months post the acute TMS course. For patients eligible for Medicare rebates, 15 maintenance session rebates will become available after 4 months.

Cancellation policy

To help us provide care to as many people as possible, we ask that you give a minimum of 48 hours notice if you are unable to attend your scheduled appointment. This allows us to reallocate that time appropriately for others in need.

If less than 48 hours notice is given or if clients are a no-show for a scheduled appointment without any prior notice, there is a cancellation fee of 100% of the appointment cost.

This fee does not qualify for a Medicare rebate and must be paid in full before your next appointment.
