PhD (Medical Genetics)
Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Pharmacogenomics
WORKING DAYS
Monday-Friday

Dr Nathan Wellington is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Pharmacogenomics at Thompson Brain and Mind Healthcare. His research explores how our genes shape individual responses to psychiatric treatments, advancing the field of precision psychiatry.
Nathan’s work focuses on genomic, transcriptomic, and epigenomic signatures that influence treatment outcomes, with the aim of developing predictive biomarkers to guide personalised interventions.
Nathan completed his PhD in Medical Genetics at the University of the Sunshine Coast, where his thesis “Genetic Biomarkers of Ketamine on PTSD” identified key molecular pathways and regulatory mechanisms underlying ketamine’s rapid and sustained therapeutic effects. His studies have revealed novel genetic and epigenetic biomarkers of treatment response, integrating next-generation sequencing and AI-assisted bioinformatics to illuminate how molecular systems contribute to resilience and recovery in post-traumatic stress disorder.
Alongside his research, Nathan has contributed extensively to teaching within the School of Health, fostering the next generation of biomedical scientists through practical and theoretical training in molecular genetics. His academic work has been published across leading journals, including Psychopharmacology, Journal of Affective Disorders, and Journal of Neurogenetics, and his data contributions are housed in public repositories such as NCBI ClinVar and GEO.
With a career spanning over two decades in leadership, technology innovation, and strategic project management, Nathan brings a translational focus to his research, bridging molecular discovery and clinical application. He is passionate about advancing genomic medicine to improve the prediction, prevention, and treatment of mental health disorders.
