A fierce advocate for mental health reform, Jim is passionate about delivering practical solutions for some

of Australia’s most pressing mental health challenges.

Jim's determination to ensure that research discoveries translate into real-world treatments that improve lives is what drove him to establish non-profit organisation Thompson Brain and Mind Healthcare (TBMH).

Brain & Mind Hub is the first clinical offering from TBMH, providing the Sunshine Coast community with access to the latest evidence-based mental health treatments, with a focus on the use of precision diagnostics and neuroscience-informed brain imaging technologies to provide personalised treatment programs for mental health disorders.

"I feel incredibly privileged

to be able to help people with

their mental health struggles

and support them in their

journey toward healing"

"Our innovative model of care uses data-driven technology and objective markers of disease to devise treatments that are unique to each person and which addresses their mental health needs.

"At Brain & Mind Hub, we’re transforming mental healthcare into a deeply personalised experience that enhances quality of life and optimises mental wellbeing."

One of Australia’s most prominent and respected experts in the field of neuroscience, Jim’s research is focused on novel approaches to treating mental health conditions and he has published more than 400 peer-reviewed articles in some of the highest-ranking international journals.

He is the co-author of the best-selling book Stress, Trauma and Synaptic Plasticity, which highlights the inextricable link between stress and its impact on synaptic plasticity, as well as contributing his expertise to other authors’ works.

He also regularly accepts international speaking invitations on topics including new mental health care models and the use of brain imaging technologies for precision treatment of mental health disorders.

A graduate of Harvard Medical School’s Leadership in Medicine Program and an admitted Fellow of the Queensland Academy of Arts and Sciences, Jim has worked in the hospital and university sectors for over 25 years. During this time, he has held numerous leadership positions including Director of Clinical Imaging at the Brain and Mind Centre at the University of Sydney and more recently, he was the inaugural Director of the Thompson Institute at the University of the Sunshine Coast where he established the foundational clinical and research programs.

We pay our respects to the Traditional Custodians of the Land where we learn, live and work, the Gubbi Gubbi (Kabi Kabi) people and Jinibara people. We acknowledge the Elders past, present and emerging, and recognise that they have been living and healing their communities on this land for many thousands of years. In particular, we note the leading role of First Nations women who are the custodians of sophisticated knowledge, community organisers and beacons of wisdom. We recognise the spiritual connection the Gubbi Gubbi (Kabi Kabi) and Jinibara have with the land, water, sky and sea and we extend this respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

TBMH welcomes and supports people from the LGBTQIA+ community and those who identify beyond the binary.
