What is ASD?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) covers a range of neurodevelopmental disorders which affect the way people communicate and interact with the world. It usually appears in childhood and characteristics may be present in some form for life.

Approximately 1% of the population have autism and each person is different, which means they have unique strengths and unique challenges.

People may experience difficulties with communicating and interacting with others, repetitive behaviours, strong interest in one topic, unusual reactions to sensory input and a preference for routine as change is often perceived as difficult.

How we can help

Our BaMH team understand the neurobiology of autistic spectrum disorders, and this means we can refine diagnosis and select therapeutic options to optimise treatment outcomes.

We take a longitudinal view of person’s life, including individual characteristics, social, emotional, educational and vocational settings. Our empathetic team work sensitively to develop a shared understanding and to exclude other conditions that may have similar symptoms.

We pay our respects to the Traditional Custodians of the Land where we learn, live and work, the Gubbi Gubbi (Kabi Kabi) people and Jinibara people. We acknowledge the Elders past, present and emerging, and recognise that they have been living and healing their communities on this land for many thousands of years. In particular, we note the leading role of First Nations women who are the custodians of sophisticated knowledge, community organisers and beacons of wisdom. We recognise the spiritual connection the Gubbi Gubbi (Kabi Kabi) and Jinibara have with the land, water, sky and sea and we extend this respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
